Author Cora Boecker designed this book as an interactive teaching tool for caregivers and parents. The aim is to guide young children through the physical and cognitive concepts required to learn how to safely operate a powered wheelchair.
The story is told by a young child using a wheelchair and the fun practicing within a pretend town. (Set up by using cardboard boxes painted as stores, gas stations and a mailbox.)
Included is an introduction with helpful hints for teaching powered wheelchair skills and suggestions in setting up the pretend town as referred to in the story.
Cora has worked in the early intervention field for over ten years. She has experience working with children in powered wheelchairs through our profession as well as in her role as a Family Support volunteer at Canuck Place Children's Hospital in BC.
All Around Town in My Wheelchair is an excellent book for all libraries as it may be used as an introduction in educating all children about wheelchair use.
A wonderful story for teaching diversity.
